WELCOME TO THE HOME OF THE DONKEY TRAIL...

Die Hel in the Gamkakloof Valley was first inhabited by farmers in 1830. It was accessible only by foot until 1963 when a road was built winding from the Swartberg Pass down into this remote valley.

Before the road, a ‘donkey trail’ over the Swartberg Mountain from Calitzdorp to Die Hel was the only commercial life line with the outside world. This historic ‘donkey trail’ start at Hans and Erika Calitz family farm ‘Living Waters near Calitzdorp. The route is being re-established as part of our heritage and will open for tourists in September 2008.

Donkey Anecdotes

LAUNCH AND OPENING OF THE TRAIL

Hikers – accompanied by donkeys and guides – will soon be able to walk to the Hell, as the pioneers of yesteryear. Before the road to Gamkaskloof was built in 1962, the only way in or out of the kloof was on foot. “Ten years ago, we bought the farm with the gateway to the original route used by donkeys to reach Gamkaskloof,” said Erika Calitz of the farm Living Waters in Groenfontein near Calitzdorp. “In partnership with Cape Nature we will re-open the original route, offering an authentic heritage experience from which the local community will benefit.

The walk will be three nights and four days with a maximum of eight people walking at any time. Guest’s luggage will be portered and all meals are included.
